2kW Solar System in Hyderabad — Is It Enough for Your Home? 2026 Guide
Gross cost ₹1,40,000, net ₹80,000 after ₹60,000 PMSG subsidy. ~240 units/month generation.
Updated May 2026 | By Sri Ishaan Solar Team
The 2kW solar system is the smallest size that qualifies for a meaningful PM Surya Ghar subsidy and makes solid financial sense for a small Hyderabad home. For a 1BHK flat, a small independent house, or a senior couple's home with modest appliance usage, 2kW can cover the bulk of the electricity bill at a net out-of-pocket cost that is genuinely low — sometimes under ₹50,000 after subsidy.
But 2kW has limits. This guide helps you determine honestly whether 2kW is enough, or whether you should stretch to 3kW from the start.
2kW Solar System — Quick Facts (Hyderabad, 2026)
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Gross system cost (before subsidy) | ₹1,40,000 |
| PMSG subsidy (PM Surya Ghar) | ₹60,000 |
| Net cost to consumer | ₹80,000 |
| Monthly generation (average) | ~240 units |
| Daily generation (average) | ~8 units |
| Monthly savings (TSSPDCL domestic tariff) | ₹1,400 – ₹1,800 |
| Payback period | 4 – 5 years |
| Roof area required | ~120 – 140 sq ft |
| Number of panels (540W each) | 4 panels |
| 25-year generation savings (estimate) | ₹3,50,000 – ₹5,00,000+ |
Who Is 2kW Right For?
A 2kW system works well for homes that match this profile:
- Monthly electricity bill: ₹1,000 – ₹2,000 (consuming 100–180 units/month)
- House type: 1BHK flat with terrace rights, or a small independent house with 1–2 rooms occupied
- Household size: 1–3 people
- Key appliances: Refrigerator, 2–3 fans, LED lights, TV, and a washing machine used a few times per week — but no air conditioner running regularly
- Available roof: 120–140 sq ft of usable, unshaded surface (compact terrace or partial roof section)
The 2kW system is also a popular choice for retired couples or elderly parents living in smaller homes who want a zero-maintenance way to cut their electricity bill significantly with a very low upfront investment after subsidy.
Detailed Cost Breakdown — 2kW On-Grid System, Hyderabad
| Component | Approximate Cost |
|---|---|
| Solar panels (4 × 540W mono PERC / TopCon) | ₹44,000 – ₹54,000 |
| On-grid inverter (2kW, Solis / Growatt / Goodwe) | ₹16,000 – ₹22,000 |
| GI / aluminium mounting structure | ₹10,000 – ₹14,000 |
| DC/AC wiring, junction boxes, fuses, earthing | ₹6,000 – ₹10,000 |
| DISCOM application + net meter charges (TSSPDCL) | ₹5,000 – ₹8,000 |
| Installation labour | ₹6,000 – ₹10,000 |
| Total gross cost | ₹87,000 – ₹1,18,000 |
| Less: PMSG subsidy | −₹60,000 |
| Net out-of-pocket cost | ₹40,000 – ₹60,000 |
Expected Savings — 2kW in Hyderabad
A 2kW system generates approximately 240 units per month across the year (120 units per kW per month average for Hyderabad's solar conditions).
| Tariff Assumption | Monthly Saving | Annual Saving |
|---|---|---|
| ₹6.00/unit (lower slab, under 200 units) | ~₹1,440 | ~₹17,280 |
| ₹6.60/unit (mid slab, 200–300 units) | ~₹1,584 | ~₹19,008 |
| ₹7.50/unit (upper slab, 300–500 units) | ~₹1,800 | ~₹21,600 |
At ₹80,000 net cost and ₹17,000–₹21,600 annual savings, the payback period is 4–5 years — making the 2kW system a solid solar option if your consumption genuinely fits the 2kW profile.
Roof Space — What a 2kW System Needs
A 2kW system uses 4 panels of 540W each. The compact footprint is one of the 2kW system's key advantages for smaller homes:
- Total panel area: ~88 sq ft (4 panels × 22 sq ft each)
- Total roof area needed (with spacing): ~120–140 sq ft
- Equivalent to: A roughly 10 ft × 13 ft unshaded section of your terrace
Even a partial terrace or a sloped roof section on a small independent house can accommodate 4 panels. The key requirement is that the panels receive unobstructed sunlight from 9 AM to 4 PM — no shading from trees, overhead water tanks, or neighbouring buildings.
When 2kW is NOT Enough
Be honest about your consumption before choosing 2kW. The system will under-deliver if:
- You run an AC: A single 1.5-ton inverter AC running 6–8 hours daily adds 180–240 units/month to your consumption. A 2kW system's entire generation would go to the AC, leaving nothing for other appliances — you'll still draw heavily from the grid.
- Your bill is consistently above ₹2,500: This signals 200+ unit consumption. A 2kW system covers only part of that, and the savings will be lower than expected.
- You have 4 or more people at home: More people means more cooking, more laundry, more device charging — consumption typically exceeds 200 units/month.
- You have a geyser / electric water heater: A 2kW geyser running 30 minutes daily consumes ~30 units/month — a significant fraction of a 2kW system's output.
- You want to future-proof: If you plan to add an AC or have children who will be home more, install 3kW now. Adding panels later is possible but requires matching equipment and additional cost.
Our honest recommendation: If you have roof space for 200 sq ft and can afford the extra ₹52,000 net cost (₹1,32,000 vs ₹80,000), choose 3kW instead of 2kW. The subsidy gap is only ₹18,000 (₹78K vs ₹60K), but you get 50% more generation and a system that stays relevant as your household grows. The 2kW is ideal only when roof space is genuinely the constraint.
2kW vs 3kW — Side by Side
| Factor | 2kW | 3kW |
|---|---|---|
| Gross cost | ₹1,40,000 | ₹2,10,000 |
| PMSG subsidy | ₹60,000 | ₹78,000 |
| Net cost | ₹80,000 | ₹1,32,000 |
| Monthly generation | ~240 units | ~360 units |
| Monthly savings | ₹1,400 – ₹1,800 | ₹2,400 – ₹3,200 |
| Roof needed | ~130 sq ft | ~210 sq ft |
| Payback period | 4 – 5 years | 4 – 5 years |
| Best for | 1BHK, no AC, small family | 2–3 BHK, 1 AC, avg family |
Note that the payback period is similar for both sizes because the subsidy scaling largely offsets the cost difference. The 3kW system delivers ~50% more savings in absolute rupee terms per month.
