RCC vs Tin/Sheet Roof Solar Installation: What's Different, What Costs More

Not every home in Telangana has a flat RCC terrace. Plenty of independent houses, farmhouses, and older properties around Hyderabad have trapezoidal or AC-sheet roofs instead — and one of the first questions we get from these homeowners is whether solar is even possible on their roof, and if it costs more. Short answer: yes, it's possible, it's common, and it does cost a bit more — here's exactly why and what to check.

The core difference: how the panels attach to the roof

On an RCC (concrete) roof, solar mounting is straightforward: a GI-coated MS structure is anchored into the slab using chemical anchor bolts, and the panels sit on top of that structure at the correct tilt angle. It's a standard, well-understood job on any flat concrete terrace.

A tin, AC-sheet, or trapezoidal metal roof already has a fixed slope and a corrugated profile — you can't drill a standard anchor into it the same way. Instead, installers use one of two specialised mounting methods:

Why sheet-roof installation costs more

The ~5% cost difference isn't a markup — it's the real cost of the extra hardware and labour. RCC mounting uses a fairly standardised, mass-produced structure and simple chemical anchors. Sheet-roof mounting needs clamps or hook bolts matched to the exact sheet profile (trapezoidal sheets vary in rib spacing and depth between manufacturers), EPDM sealing washers at every penetration, and more careful, slower installation work to avoid damaging the sheet or creating a future leak point. None of that is optional if the job is done properly — it's the difference between an install that's watertight in year one and one that's still watertight in year ten.

What actually determines if your sheet roof is solar-ready

Roof material alone doesn't decide feasibility — these three things do, and they're exactly what a proper site survey checks before confirming a quote:

Common concerns, answered honestly

"Will it void my roof warranty?" — If your roofing manufacturer offers a warranty, check its terms on roof penetrations before installing; most standard AC-sheet roofs in residential use don't carry a formal warranty of this kind, but it's worth a five-minute check either way.

"Can I switch to rib clamps to avoid any drilling at all?" — Where the sheet profile allows it, yes, and it's the preferred method when feasible since it eliminates penetration risk entirely. Not every trapezoidal profile is compatible with every clamp design, which is again something the site survey confirms.

"Is a tin roof installation slower?" — Slightly, because of the extra care needed at each mounting point, but it's still a standard turnkey job within our usual 7-10 day installation window.
