Every solar company says "25-year warranty." But there are actually 3 different warranties and most people only know about one.
The 3 Types of Solar Warranty
1. Panel Performance Warranty (25 years)
The manufacturer guarantees the panel will produce at least 80% of rated power after 25 years. This is standard across all Tier-1 brands.
2. Panel Product Warranty (10-12 years)
Covers manufacturing defects — cracked cells, delamination, junction box failures. This is what actually matters in the first decade.
3. Workmanship Warranty (1-10 years, varies by installer)
Covers the installation quality — mounting structure, wiring, waterproofing, cable management. This is where most problems occur.
What to Ask Your Installer
- How many years workmanship warranty? (minimum 5)
- Does it cover roof leaks from mounting?
- Who do I call for service — you or the manufacturer?
- Is there an annual maintenance plan?
