Every solar company says "25-year warranty," and it's technically true — but it's also the most misunderstood promise in the whole industry. There are actually three separate warranties on a solar installation, they cover completely different things, and the one most people fixate on is the one least likely to ever matter to them. The manufacturer guarantees the panel will produce at least 80% of rated power after 25 years. This is standard across all Tier-1 brands.
2. Panel Product Warranty (10-12 years)

3. Workmanship Warranty (1-10 years, varies by installer)

The Warranty That Actually Matters — and Why
Here's the part most sales conversations skip. In the first ten years of a rooftop system, the panels themselves almost never fail — a genuine manufacturing defect on a Tier-1 panel is rare, and when it happens the manufacturer's warranty covers it. What actually causes problems in those years is the installation: a mounting anchor that wasn't properly waterproofed and now leaks in the monsoon, a loosely crimped DC connector that trips the system, cable runs that weren't clamped and chafe over time. None of that is the panel's fault, so none of it is covered by that headline 25-year figure. It falls squarely under the installer's workmanship warranty — the shortest and most variable of the three.
That's why the honest advice is to worry less about whose panels carry a 25-year performance guarantee (nearly all Tier-1 brands do, at very similar terms) and worry more about who is standing behind the installation five and ten years from now.
