Three Types, One Right Choice for Your Home

Most Hyderabad homeowners should choose on-grid solar — it's the cheapest, subsidy-eligible, and earns net metering credits. But if your area has frequent power cuts, hybrid is worth the extra investment. Off-grid is almost exclusively for farms and remote sites without a grid connection.

Understanding Each System Type

Here's what each system actually does — and who it makes sense for in Hyderabad and Telangana.

🔌

On-Grid Solar

Most Popular in Hyderabad

An on-grid system connects your solar panels directly to the DISCOM electricity grid via a grid-tied inverter. During the day, solar power runs your home first — any excess is automatically exported to the grid and credited to your account via net metering. At night or on cloudy days, you draw power from the grid as normal.

Because there is no battery, the system shuts down automatically during power cuts — this is a mandatory safety feature to prevent live current from backfeeding into the grid where linemen may be working. If power cuts are rare in your area, this is usually not a problem.

On-grid is eligible for the PM Surya Ghar (PMSG) central subsidy of up to ₹78,000 — making it by far the most affordable entry point into solar for Hyderabad homeowners.

Advantages

  • + Lowest upfront cost
  • + PMSG subsidy eligible
  • + Net metering earns credits
  • + No battery replacement cost
  • + Simple, reliable technology

Limitations

  • No power during outages
  • Requires grid connection
  • Savings depend on grid tariff
🔋

Off-Grid Solar

For Farms & Remote Sites

An off-grid system is fully independent of the electricity grid. Solar panels charge a battery bank throughout the day, and you draw power from the batteries at night or whenever needed. No grid connection is required — or used. This makes off-grid ideal for agricultural land, remote farm buildings, construction sites, and locations where getting a DISCOM connection is difficult or expensive.

The main cost driver in off-grid systems is the battery bank — typically lead-acid or lithium-ion batteries that store 1–3 days' worth of power. Battery replacement every 5–10 years adds ongoing cost, and sizing errors (too small a battery) are common mistakes that leave homes without power on cloudy days.

Off-grid is not eligible for PM Surya Ghar subsidy because there is no DISCOM connection for net metering. For Hyderabad homes with a grid connection, off-grid almost never makes financial sense — hybrid is a better choice.

Advantages

  • + Works anywhere, no grid needed
  • + Power during all outages
  • + Truly independent energy
  • + Best for remote land/farms

Limitations

  • No subsidy available
  • No net metering
  • Battery replacement cost
  • Needs careful sizing
  • Higher total cost for city homes

Hybrid Solar

Best of Both Worlds

A hybrid system combines a battery bank with a grid connection. During the day, solar panels generate power — you use what you need, excess charges the battery, and any remaining surplus goes to the grid via net metering. During power cuts, the battery automatically kicks in, keeping your lights, fans, and essential appliances running seamlessly.

Hybrid systems use a special hybrid inverter that manages three power sources — solar, battery, and grid — simultaneously. This is the smartest system available, and the one we recommend most for Hyderabad areas that experience more than 1–2 hours of power cuts per day. It is also eligible for PMSG subsidy and net metering.

The upside is complete peace of mind. The downside is higher upfront cost — primarily because of the battery pack. Modern lithium-ion batteries (like LFP chemistry) last 10+ years and degrade slowly, making the total cost of ownership much better than older lead-acid options.

Advantages

  • + Works during power cuts
  • + PMSG subsidy eligible
  • + Net metering earns credits
  • + Best long-term ROI in cut-prone areas
  • + Smart energy management

Limitations

  • Highest upfront cost
  • Battery needs replacement eventually
  • Slightly more complex system

Which System Should You Choose?

Answer three questions to find the right system for your home.

Question Your Answer Recommendation
Do you have a DISCOM electricity connection? No Off-Grid
Do you have more than 2 hours of power cuts daily? Yes Hybrid
Do you have more than 2 hours of power cuts daily? No / Rarely On-Grid
Is your budget tight and cuts are rare? Yes On-Grid (cheapest)
Do you want to future-proof with battery addition later? Yes On-Grid with hybrid-ready inverter
Is this for a farm or property without grid access? Yes Off-Grid

Pro tip from our team: If you are unsure, we always recommend installing a hybrid-compatible inverter even with an on-grid system. This costs only ₹5,000–₹10,000 more than a standard grid-tied inverter — but lets you add a battery later without replacing the inverter. Many of our customers in Gachibowli and Kondapur start on-grid and add batteries 1–2 years later when they get a promotion or when power cuts increase.

Your Questions Answered

Common questions about solar system types in Hyderabad.

Which solar system is best for Hyderabad homes?

For most Hyderabad areas with a stable grid — Madhapur, Gachibowli, Secunderabad, Banjara Hills, Kondapur — on-grid solar is the best choice. It is the cheapest upfront, eligible for PM Surya Ghar subsidy up to ₹78,000, and earns you net metering credits on your electricity bill. For areas with frequent power cuts such as Uppal, LB Nagar, or Boduppal, a hybrid system is worth the extra investment.

Does on-grid solar work during power cuts in Hyderabad?

No. Standard on-grid (grid-tied) solar shuts down automatically during power cuts — this is a mandatory safety requirement to prevent backfeeding live current to the grid where linemen may be working. If you want solar power during outages, you need a hybrid system with a battery bank. Off-grid systems also work during outages but have no grid connection at all.

What is net metering and how does it work in Hyderabad?

Net metering allows your solar system to export excess electricity to the TSSPDCL or TSNPDCL grid when you generate more than you consume. A bi-directional meter records imports and exports separately. Your monthly bill is calculated on net units consumed (imported minus exported) — effectively reducing your bill to near zero for most families. Sri Ishaan Solar handles the full net metering application with your DISCOM — you do not need to visit any government office.

Is a hybrid solar system worth the extra cost in Hyderabad?

It depends on your power cut frequency. If your area has fewer than 1–2 hours of cuts per day on average, the extra ₹60,000–₹80,000 cost of batteries may take longer to recover. But for areas like Uppal, LB Nagar, Boduppal, and rural outskirts with 4–8 hours of daily cuts, hybrid solar pays for itself through the value of uninterrupted power — no inverter battery maintenance, no generator fuel, no UPS replacements.

Can I upgrade from on-grid to hybrid solar later?

Yes — if you install a hybrid-compatible inverter from the start (which we always recommend). The cost to retrofit a battery bank later is typically ₹60,000–₹1,20,000 depending on capacity and battery chemistry. Many customers in Hyderabad start with on-grid to get the subsidy and lower upfront cost, then add batteries 1–2 years later when needed. Ask us about hybrid-ready inverter options when getting your quote.
