On-Grid vs Off-Grid vs Hybrid Solar — Which is Best for Hyderabad? 2026 Comparison

Cost, backup, subsidy eligibility, and payback — an honest breakdown for Telangana buyers.

Updated May 2026 | By Sri Ishaan Solar Team

The first question every solar buyer in Hyderabad asks — after "how much does it cost?" — is "which type of system should I get?" On-grid, hybrid, and off-grid are three fundamentally different architectures. Each has a different cost, a different relationship with the TSSPDCL grid, and a different answer to the most practical question: "Will it keep the lights on during a power cut?"

This guide gives you the honest, unfiltered answer — without upselling you on features you don't need.

Quick Overview: Three System Types

On-Grid Solar in Detail

An on-grid (also called grid-tied) system is the simplest and most popular type of solar installation in Hyderabad. It consists of solar panels, a grid-tie inverter, AC and DC wiring, and a TSSPDCL-approved net meter. There is no battery.

How it works: During daylight hours, your solar panels generate DC electricity. The inverter converts this to AC and your home's appliances run on it first. If generation exceeds consumption, the surplus flows into the TSSPDCL grid and your export meter ticks up. At night or on cloudy days, your home draws from the grid as normal.

What it does NOT do: An on-grid inverter has an anti-islanding protection feature mandated by Indian grid codes. The moment TSSPDCL supply is interrupted (power cut), the inverter shuts down — even if the sun is shining. This is a safety requirement to protect TSSPDCL linemen working on the grid. It is not a defect. Your on-grid system will produce zero output during a power cut.

Why on-grid makes sense for most Hyderabad buyers:

Sri Ishaan Solar Verdict — On-Grid: The right choice for the majority of Hyderabad residential buyers. If your area has less than 1–2 hours of power cuts per day, the extra cost of a battery adds years to your payback without a meaningful benefit.

Hybrid Solar in Detail

A hybrid solar system adds a battery bank to the grid-tied architecture. The hybrid inverter simultaneously manages: (1) solar generation, (2) battery charging and discharging, and (3) grid import/export. During a power cut, the system seamlessly switches to battery — keeping your selected critical circuits running.

Battery options in Hyderabad (2026):

Backup capacity guidance: A 5kWh LiFePO4 battery (usable: 4.5kWh) can power a typical Hyderabad home's essential loads — 2 fans, LED lights, router, and phone charging — for approximately 6–8 hours during a power cut. Adding a 1.5-ton AC on backup requires 4–5 kWh per hour of AC use, which rapidly depletes the battery.

What the PMSG subsidy covers in a hybrid system: The subsidy applies only to the solar panels. The battery is not subsidised. For a 5kW hybrid system with 5kWh battery, you receive the same ₹78,000 PMSG subsidy as an on-grid buyer, but pay an additional ₹75,000–₹1,50,000 for the battery and hybrid inverter above the on-grid price.

Why hybrid makes sense for some Hyderabad buyers:

Sri Ishaan Solar Verdict — Hybrid: The right choice for buyers in areas with 2+ hours of daily power cuts, or those with critical backup needs. The battery premium is real (₹75K–₹1.5L) but justified if you currently spend on inverter maintenance and have a genuine need for uninterrupted power.

Off-Grid Solar in Detail

An off-grid solar system is completely independent of the TSSPDCL grid. It consists of solar panels, an off-grid inverter/charge controller, and a large battery bank sized to cover 1–3 days of consumption without solar input. There is no net meter, no grid connection, and no PMSG subsidy.

When off-grid is genuinely the right choice:

Why off-grid almost never makes sense for Hyderabad homes:

Sri Ishaan Solar Verdict — Off-Grid: Do not install an off-grid system if you have a TSSPDCL connection. The cost premium over hybrid is significant with no corresponding benefit for grid-connected properties.

Decision Flowchart: Which System is Right for You?

Step 1: Do you have a TSSPDCL/TSNPDCL grid connection at your property?

No → Off-grid is your only option. Size battery for 2 days of autonomy.

Yes → Continue to Step 2.

Step 2: Do you experience power cuts of 2 or more hours per day on average in your area?

No (stable grid, less than 1–2 hrs/day)On-grid is the right choice. Lowest cost, fastest payback, maximum subsidy.

Yes (2+ hours/day) → Continue to Step 3.

Step 3: Do you have critical loads (medical equipment, home office, young infants) or currently spend on inverter battery maintenance?

YesHybrid is the right choice. Battery provides backup; LiFePO4 replaces your old inverter battery permanently.

No (can tolerate outages)On-grid with a UPS/inverter for critical loads may still be more economical than full hybrid.

Cost Comparison for 5kW System in Hyderabad (May 2026)

Gross system cost (before subsidy)₹2.8–3.3L₹3.64–4.77L₹4–6L
PMSG Subsidy (3kW applicable)₹78,000₹78,000 (solar only)Nil
Net cost to consumer₹2.1–2.5L₹2.86–3.99L₹4–6L
Monthly bill savings (estimated)₹3,500–5,000₹3,500–5,000₹3,500–5,000*

* Off-grid savings are from avoided grid bills only; no net metering benefit. Savings lower if grid tariff doesn't apply.

For Hyderabad Specifically: The Verdict by Area

Hyderabad's grid reliability is not uniform. Here is a practical area-by-area guide:

Area / LocalityGrid ReliabilityRecommendation
Gachibowli, Madhapur, Nanakramguda, HITEC CityVery stable (IT corridor)On-grid — no case for hybrid
Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Film NagarVery stableOn-grid
Kukatpally, Miyapur, Bachupally, KompallyGood (occasional cuts)On-grid; hybrid only if cuts exceed 2 hrs/day
Uppal, LB Nagar, Dilsukhnagar, MalkajgiriModerate (2–4 hrs/day possible)Hybrid — cuts are real and frequent
Alwal, Moulali, Secunderabad innerVariable (older infrastructure)Hybrid — worth the premium
Rural Telangana villages (Medchal, Rangareddy outskirts)Unreliable (4–8 hrs/day cuts)Hybrid with larger battery (7.5–10kWh)
Agricultural land / no grid connectionNo gridOff-grid — only valid case

What About Battery Replacement Costs?

Every hybrid system buyer should factor in battery replacement cost over the 25-year panel life:
